چکیده

High levels of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner in diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.), (LC50 more than 280 ppm) was observed in a watercress greenhouse in Osaka Prefecture in 1988. Populations of egg, larva, pupa and adult of diamondback moth were monitored weekly throughout 1988. Population of the larva fluctuated from nearly 0 to 1,300,000. Three control methods were attempted: Insect Killer (high voltage electric shocker with luring purple color lamps), Konagakon (a sex pheromone dispenser), and the vacuum cleaner to suck adult moths. The percentage of moths killed by 24 sets of Insect Killer in the greenhouse was estimated at less than 15% of the emerged adults even in summer. The percentage of mating reduction by Konagakon depended on moth density (more than 90% of mating reduction i f 1 moth/m2; less than 50% if 3 moths/m2). The vacuum cleaner reduced moth population by 50% in every operation. It is therefore possible to reduce the moth density where Konagakon is effective through five or six operations of vacuum sucker.

Prospects for novel approaches towards management of the diamondback moth

Primary reliance on synthetic insecticides for control of diamondback moth has usually failed because of insecticide resistance and/or reduction of natural enemies by insecticides. Insecticide resistance has also been more recently documented with biological insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis and some growth regulators. Insecticide resistance management programs must be implemented and...

The Control of Diamondback Moth with Thuricide

Thuricide, a Bacillus thuringiensis formulation, is active against more than 200 lepidopterous species in their larval stage. Best efficacy is obtained when Thuricide is applied at hatching time and/or on 1st to 3rd larval instars during their intensive feeding period. Since Thuricide must be eaten by the insect to be effective, thorough leaf coverage is essential for best results. Thuricide HP...

Influences of Cry1Ac Broccoli on Larval Survival and Oviposition of Diamondback Moth

Larval survival and oviposition behavior of three genotypes of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), (homozygous Cry1Ac-susceptibile, Cry1Ac-resistant, and their F1 hybrids), on transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) broccoli expressing different levels of Cry1Ac protein were evaluated in laboratory. These Bt broccoli lines were designated as relative low, medium,...

Cross-Resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis Toxin CryIF in the Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella).

Selection with Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki, which contains CryIA and CryII toxins, caused a >200-fold cross-resistance to CryIF toxin from B. thuringiensis subsp. aizawai in the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. CryIE was not toxic, but CryIB was highly toxic to both selected and unselected larvae. The results show that extremely high levels of cross-resistance can be conferred ...

Genetic mapping of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins in diamondback moth using biphasic linkage analysis.

Transgenic plants producing environmentally benign Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins are deployed increasingly for insect control, but their efficacy will be short-lived if pests adapt quickly. The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), a worldwide pest of vegetables, is the first insect to evolve resistance to Bt toxins in open-field populations. A recessive autosomal gene confers resistance...
